Jia (Lily) Zeng - China, 17 May, 2023
My name is Lily and I am originally from China and currently studying a Bachelor of Nursing here at QUT.
I decided to study in Australia because I wanted to experience a different education system and live in another country. I’ve always been very interested in the medical field, and it’s been my dream to become a nurse and help people in need, so I’m very happy I finally will fulfill my goal.
Living in Brisbane
I love living in Brisbane, it’s so green and has a slow and calming atmosphere which makes it a great place to study. The outdoor lifestyle is fantastic and I especially enjoy taking walks along the South Bank Parklands which is just a short walk across the river from the QUT Gardens Point campus.
Brisbane is so multicultural, and I’ve made friends with people from all over the world. It was a bit daunting to move to a new city and country at first, with many new things to get adjusted too including learning a new language. However, after making friends with people in a similar situation it made it a lot easier, and I feel I’ve grown to be independent.
QUT Welcome Week
As a new student, I can highly recommend attending Welcome week. I went to the orientation session as well as other activities which was very beneficial. This is a great opportunity to join clubs and meet students from your country but also to make friends with students from all over the world and locals. This was also a good time to practice my English skills and it made me feel more at ease and welcomed.
Meeting new friends
I am currently a part of the QUT Badminton Club and QUT Chinese Students and Scholars Association which has created another opportunity to meet both international and Australian uni students. If I ever feel homesick, I go to a suburb in Brisbane called Sunnybank, where I can buy different food products at the Asian grocer, eat Chinese food, and meet other Chinese students, it’s an amazing place and it reminds me of home.
Getting around Brisbane
I currently live in a share house next to the Kelvin Grove campus which is very convenient, saves me money and time as I can walk to class. If I need to use public transport, Brisbane has many options and it’s easy to get around. I mainly use trains and buses and I plan my journey ahead via the TransLink website, which gives you clear instructions how to get to your destination. You also get discounts as a student which is a big plus.
Follow your dreams
Studying at QUT is great as the tutors and lecturers are very helpful and willing to answer any questions you might have. The teaching style is very practical, and you will gain some great experience that will be beneficial for the future.
My advice to other students that are thinking of going overseas to study is that you should be brave and follow your dreams. It can be tough leaving your home country, friends, and family but it’s all worth it.
