Why I chose QUT

The dynamic nature of the IT field is what drew me to pursue the Bachelor of Information Technology at QUT, with a focus on the Information Systems major. This program embraces constant change and aligns with my belief that adaptability is crucial in navigating the evolving technological landscape. I see it as an opportunity to not only gain theoretical knowledge in the fusion of technical expertise with business acumen, but also to develop practical skills to help me translate my ideas into impactful solutions, making a tangible difference in the world.

Without a doubt, I would highly recommend QUT to others. The diverse range of courses, the vibrant campus life, and the commitment to providing high-quality, real-world applications in coursework creates an exceptional learning environment. It is an institution where students not only gain knowledge but also develop the skills needed to thrive in their future careers. Choosing QUT has been one of the best decisions of my academic journey. I greatly appreciate all the effort and support offered by the staff and teaching team, as well as career opportunities provided at this excellent institution.

My favourite part of the course

During my first year, I have had many opportunities to participate in real-world projects embedded in the curriculum. In my IT units, for example, I got to develop a temperature sensor using a series of small single-board computers and applying coding concepts and develop a user interface for a mobile application. The most valuable aspect of these experiences was the opportunity to brainstorm ideas and collaborating with my teams to solve problems.

Studying a double degree

I particularly enjoy the flexibility of the double degree, as it opens doors to explore different aspects of both business and IT. I have a chance to touch upon various knowledge and skillsets of each major. Moreover, the excellent 24-hour computer labs offered for IT courses have greatly contributed to my learning experience.

I found the workload in my double degree pleasantly surprising - it’s structured in a way that allows students to craft their schedules thoughtfully. The structure of the degree not only facilitates a deep understanding of the material but also provides ample time for reflection, enabling students to approach projects with their best abilities. It’s a balance that encourages both productivity and meaningful learning, creating a rich educational experience that prospective students should eagerly anticipate.

What ‘real-world’ learning looks like in business and information technology

To me, ‘real world’ isn’t just a concept, it’s the realm where knowledge transforms into practical experiences. In my course, this translates into hands-on projects, which go beyond theoretical concepts and include the challenges and collaborations one might encounter in a professional setting.

Support

QUT’s comprehensive support services have proven exceptional, with the academic support standing out as a reassuring resource during a challenging semester. I remember a period when I struggled with a complex IT assignment, and I benefited greatly from multiple workshops organised by the teaching team to offer one-on-one and group support for the students throughout the entire process. This guidance played a pivotal role in transforming what initially felt daunting into a manageable task. This support really underscores the university’s commitment to ensuring students thrive academically, even in the face of complexity.

Student life beyond the classroom

QUT impresses me with its dedication to facilitating connections among students. I'm genuinely grateful for the diverse range of events they organise, from excursions and day trips to social and well-being workshops, and academic sessions. These experiences have not only enriched my university journey but have also been instrumental in forming deep and meaningful friendships.

A highlight of my university experience has been engaging in numerous activities of QUT clubs and societies, such as Women in Business (WiB), Women in Tech (WiT), Bubble Tea Society (BBTS), Asian Pop Society (APS), and Vietnamese Society (VietQ). Participating in the Women in Business (WiB) and Women in Tech (WiT) clubs has significantly enriched my personal and professional growth. What truly captivates me is the genuine dedication and effort behind the scenes to foster inclusivity and create an enjoyable atmosphere for the members and participants.
