My study and career plans

I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) because it aligns with my interest in healthcare while offering a unique specialisation that is crucial for modern medicine – understanding diagnostic images. Additionally, the field of medical imaging is projected to have high demand in the future, making it a stable and lucrative career choice.

The versatility of the field, with potential pathways such as radiologist, sonographer, radiographer, MRI specialist, and medical researcher, offers diverse career prospects. The high salary associated with medical imaging roles adds to its attractiveness.

QUT’s strengths

I chose to study at QUT because it offers the best Bachelor of Medical Imaging degree in Australia, consistently ranking at the top for this program. Receiving an Academic Excellence Scholarship from QUT validated my decision, highlighting the university's recognition of my academic achievements.

QUT is renowned for its exceptional placement support arrangements and its emphasis on practical, real-world experiences, which I believe are crucial for developing the skills and understanding needed to excel in my career. Additionally, QUT's location in Brisbane, a city I am fond of, makes it an ideal place for both my academic and personal growth.

Learning in real clinics

To me, "real world" means gaining practical, hands-on experience that prepares you for professional challenges. I have accumulated a total of 2000 hours of placement across various locations in Queensland. This experience included rotations through public and private hospitals as well as private clinics. These placements have been invaluable in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Engaging with real patients and working under the supervision of experienced professionals allowed me to apply my learning in real-world scenarios, which is vastly different from role-playing or working with dummies. Interacting with actual patients, who have diverse personalities and emotional states, helped me develop a more open and adaptive mindset. I had to develop skills to manage these real-life challenges.

Additionally, the research project for the Honours program was enriching. It enhanced my understanding of the research component within the medical field and prepared me for potential future contributions to medical imaging advancements.

From student to professional

The placements began in the first year of my degree, allowing me to progressively build my competencies. This hands-on experience fundamentally changed my learning approach, shifting my focus from merely completing coursework to actively developing my professional skills. They helped me transition from a student mindset to a professional development perspective, preparing me to excel in the medical imaging field.

Observing and collaborating with graduates and professionals in the field provided me with insights into the practical aspects of my future career, which motivated me to approach my studies more proactively.

Student support made a difference

Several QUT support services have been instrumental in my academic and personal development. The QUT librarian sessions significantly helped me with researching and writing, enhancing my ability to source and reference academic materials effectively. ‘Studiosity’, a 24/7 online writing support tool that is free for QUT students, was invaluable in improving my English and writing skills. The HiQ team assisted with course-related queries, unit enrolments, class registrations, assignment extensions, and even minor questions.

Additionally, the QUT medical services on each campus were very convenient and financially supportive as bulk-billing practices. The shuttle bus service between campuses was also very helpful. These support services have collectively contributed to a smoother and more enriching university experience.

Financial support and scholarships

I was awarded the QUT Academic Excellence Scholarship, recognising my academic achievements and providing financial support. Being awarded the scholarship reinforced my decision to study at QUT, where I can gain top-notch education and skills in medical imaging.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I received the Equity Scholarships Scheme, which helped alleviate the financial stress of living costs during that challenging period. I also benefited from the Equity Computer Scholarship, which provided me with a brand-new laptop when my computer broke down. This support was crucial, allowing me to focus on my assignments without interruption.

These scholarships and concessions have been instrumental in reducing financial stress and enabling me to concentrate on my studies and academic success.

Life as a student

Brisbane’s good weather, characterised by a comfortable climate that's neither too hot nor too cold and with minimal rain, makes it an ideal place to live and study. Brisbane strikes a perfect balance in terms of pace; it's not too busy but not too slow, offering a relaxed environment that is conducive to focusing on studies while still providing plenty of activities and opportunities. Additionally, Brisbane's multicultural atmosphere brings together people from diverse backgrounds, creating a vibrant and inclusive community. Being the heart of Queensland, Brisbane offers access to numerous resources, attractions, and professional opportunities, enhancing both my academic and personal life.

As a member of the QUT Korean Student Association (KSA), I served as an administrator for one year and as president for two years. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing Korean culture with other students interested in K-pop, K-dramas, and Korean traditions.

Additionally, I participated in the QUT Japanese Club and MEDRAD (QUT Medical Radiation Society), which allowed me to experience new cultures and build connections with fellow students. I was also part of the QUT Excellence team, where I enjoyed helping other students and developing my personal skills and professional abilities alongside other College of Excellence teams. These activities enriched my university experience by fostering a sense of community, cultural exchange, and personal growth.
