Manvi studies a Master of Public Health at QUT. We asked her to tell us about her course, support services, life in Brisbane and making friends on campus. Read on to find out what Manvi had to say.

Why did you choose the Master of Public Health?

Coming from a clinical field, I wanted to be a part of the health sector where I am always in contact with people. The Master of Public Health was the perfect course due to the broad spectrum of careers it leads to. It includes every aspect of the health industry and has diverse options to choose from. Moreover, public health is a respected and valued study area in Australia.

What do you like about public health at QUT?

The list of things I like about my course is never-ending, but my favourite would be the focus on student learning. My assessments and tasks are based on what I have learned during the lectures and workshops. It made me independent of rote learning and helped me become confident in my thought process. Additionally, the syllabus and structure did not overwhelm me and enabled me to go ahead with a steady pace. Another thing I like about my course is that we apply our learnings to real-life scenarios. We also have interactive sessions, study support, and focus on research in the course which are very useful.

Why did you choose to study at QUT?

I remember being extremely confused about which university to choose. When I started making a list, QUT was on top. The more research I did, the closer I got to my decision of choosing QUT. In every aspect - academics, extracurriculars, and student support - QUT ranked high. After a thorough process and many consultations, I chose QUT.

I received the International Merit Scholarship which reduced my tuition fees by 25%. Getting the scholarship played a major role in finalising QUT as my study destination. As an international student, receiving the scholarship has decreased the financial burden on my parents and has motivated me to perform even better.

What support have you received from QUT?QUT support services and app

The services QUT provides are one of a kind. The QUT services have helped me not just as a student, but in my personal life as well. I have sought help from QUT Library multiple times for my referencing issues; QUT provides me with online access to countless academic papers; the QUT app has never failed to guide me through the campus or check my schedule; and the wide range of delicious cheap food outlets on campus have always been favourite. I once injured my foot and booked an appointment with a general physician at the QUT campus. The entire process was so easy and helped me a lot in recovering. I remember my parents appreciating the availability of medical services at QUT. The study rooms are my go-to place to complete my assignments, even at midnight!

Tell us about student life and living in Brisbane

One thing I boast about is the endless fun events happening at QUT. I have attended various arts and crafts workshops, movie screenings, cultural food festivals, and themed parties that have helped me meet new people and make my university life fun.

I made friends on campus on the first day of the orientation. A lot of students were waiting to get their ID cards and that is when I initiated a conversation with the girl standing next to me. We got to know we are in the same course and immediately clicked! We attended the orientation together, had a bagel at Bagel Boys, and connected on social media. She later introduced me to some of her friends and since then, we have been really close friends. I also got to meet some amazing people at the food festivals QUT hosts and art workshops I have attended.

I have been actively involved in the QUT Arts and Crafts club. As I enjoy exploring my creative side, the club offers me a great number of opportunities by organising weekly activities where we learn a new craft and bond over coffee. The thing I appreciate the most is that the club has introduced me to some new art forms that I was not aware of. It never gets boring!

I chose Brisbane because I loved QUT! One can never run out of fun things to do around the city. The Brisbane City Council keeps organising activities that help me relieve stress and explore more of the beautiful surroundings. The greenery, public transport, safety, and a never-ending list of food places to try have amazed me.

What would you say to someone thinking about studying at QUT?

I would definitely recommend QUT to others so that they get a chance to be a part of this supportive and fun environment that will help them enhance their skills, hone their profession, and have a lifetime of memories!
