The world of work is changing. You'll have multiple jobs and careers in your lifetime - some that have yet to be realised. A double degree can help set you up for success by broadening the scope of your career opportunities.

How it works

In a double degree you’ll combine two bachelor degrees into a single course of study and graduate with two qualifications. A double degree also allows you to complete two degrees in a shorter time then it would take to complete them separately. This works by dedicating the time you would normally spend studying electives (optional units) in a single degree to completing the core (compulsory) units of each degree in your double.

I'm finding there's plenty of cross-over between work and uni. A voice to those without

'I knew I wanted to help people and had an interest in mental health. When I saw the psychology and justice double degree, I thought it would give me a multitude of career possibilities, which it absolutely has. My degree is extremely versatile and I have the ability to move around various government agencies. I’m currently employed with the Office of the Public Guardian, where I investigate allegations of neglect, exploitation and abuse (including financial) for adults with impaired decision-making capacity. Giving a voice to those without is definitely the highlight of my career.'

The benefits

A double degree gives you the opportunity to create your own specialist career niche by combining two complementary study areas that interest you.

When you graduate, you have the option to work in a range of careers offered by each of your study areas. It will give you the competitive advantage with employers who value your broader understanding across more than one field.

Double your options, not your workload

A double degree doesn’t mean double the workload - you'll typically have the same workload and complete the same number of units (subjects) each semester as a single degree student. Check your course structure for details.

In most cases you’ll study units from both disciplines at the same time, although some double degrees are structured so you'll spend some semesters focusing exclusively on one study area.

Study across two campuses

You may have classes at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses. The free intercampus shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes during semester, making transport easy.

Each study area may come with different facilities, learning spaces, expectations, processes and assessment. Information sessions at orientation can help you get to know what to expect.

Flexibility and electives

You won’t have as many elective options as you would with a single degree - your flexibility comes through being able to combine two study areas into one course. If you want to go on exchange or look at other overseas options, talk to us early. It can be hard to fit in a long-term exchange.
