Career oriented learning
'I originally chose a double degree for employability, and QUT had a great reputation for both law and business, as well as work integrated learning. I'm finding there's plenty of cross-over between work and uni. I'm using the skills and knowledge I've gained at QUT at work, and work has given me skills like professional writing that I’ve been able to use with my uni assignments.'
A voice to those without
'I knew I wanted to help people and had an interest in mental health. When I saw the psychology and justice double degree, I thought it would give me a multitude of career possibilities, which it absolutely has. My degree is extremely versatile and I have the ability to move around various government agencies. I’m currently employed with the Office of the Public Guardian, where I investigate allegations of neglect, exploitation and abuse (including financial) for adults with impaired decision-making capacity. Giving a voice to those without is definitely the highlight of my career.'
A broader way of thinking
'I am into international media companies like BuzzFeed and Alphabet and thought that my double degree would help me gain insight in the relevant fields. So far it has allowed me to gain various perspectives and understand the world with different filters. I would say my degrees provide a lot more than just a certificate, but really shape who I am as an individual.'
Promote creativity
'When I was 11 years old, I thought the internet was the most boring place ever. Now I'm on a mission to teach 1 million women tech skills by 2025 through Girl Geek Academy, the organisation I co-founded with other QUT graduates. I'm also an adrenaline junkie, breaking systems on purpose and making them more resilient with chaos engineering in my role as principal site reliability engineer with Gremlin in the US.'
Double your opportunities
'I thoroughly enjoyed the practical components of my double degree, which involved developing marketing campaigns and software solutions for Queensland businesses. Along with the opportunity to expand my technical and business skill sets, these experiences taught me the value of stakeholder management and the importance of utilising my soft skills to build rapport with business partners. I still implement the lessons I've learnt through these experiences within my career.'
Double your impact
'I was initially interested in just environmental science but I decided that I could make a greater impact through electrical engineering by focusing on energy as this is a huge contributor to climate change. This was around the time of the state-wide blackout in South Australia which I found very interesting as it demonstrated the huge challenges that faced the energy industry in the coming decades. By combining these two degrees I felt that I could cover both my interests in the environment and energy and make a positive impact in my career.'
