About

The buildings and landscapes around us are designed and constructed with a deep understanding of the materials that we use. This unit explores how material choices impact on the design of our environments. It provides you with knowledge about how to design buildings, interiors, and landscapes by choosing suitable materials with an understanding of their properties and characteristics.

Overview

  • You will learn how architects, interior designers, and landscape architects design buildings and environments using suitable construction materials.
  • You will explore the properties and characteristics of the materials we use to construct buildings and landscapes.
  • You will investigate the sustainable characteristics of materials and learn how to assess and choose suitable materials.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the physical properties of common construction materials.
  • Explain the historic development of the built environment through its physical creation.
  • Understand the process of materials selection and their impacts on design outcomes.
  • Understand operational and embodied energy and whole life carbon implications of materials.
