The ongoing vinyl record revival is well and truly in the house at Vermilion Records, the not-for-profit, student-run record label at QUT, with its first efforts to press a physical record now available.
Featuring the fresh voices and innovative sounds of young, emerging talent, including current music students and QUT alumni, Vermilion Records Volume 1 will be launched on campus at Kelvin Grove on Friday 1 November.
“Vermilion Records has been going strong for seven years and uploading releases from its stable to Spotify since 2019,” Dr Kelman said.
“This new, physical record features some of the best music we have ever put together. It’s an incredible, diverse collection of music created by young people launching into their careers with such delightful enthusiasm.
“Many have already begun to make their mark, showing up on programs like Triple j Unearthed, for example.
“Having access to the world class recording studio facilities at QUT for a student-run record label like Vermilion, is a massive advantage for those studying music at QUT.”
Dr Kelman said the Vermilion Records Volume 1 compilation gave a voice to the next generation of artists. As well as QUT students and alumni, it includes local musicians from around Brisbane.
“From soulful ballads to high-energy anthems, experimental beats to indie gems, there is something for most tastes. Each artist shares a passion for pushing boundaries and creating music that resonates,” she said.
The line-up includes acts by current QUT music students Milliepede (Millie Tagney), Deni (Kristel Morante), Georgia Scarlett (Georgia Manthey), FevaDreams (Charlie Gates), Ollie Schwerin, Strayfold (Chelsea Costar, Ethan Wood, Harper Kodicek, Zac Carr, Matt Norrish, along with recent graduate Jack Lestone), and Aria Daniel (a member of Graveyard Club along with alumni Cristina Richards, Thomas Wilkinson, and Max Muir).
Recent graduate Samuel Rety performs as Samichoux and the album also features Brisbane producer and solo artist Kami.
“Bachelor of Creative Industries student Taj Gardner, meanwhile, designed the album cover and led the initiative while the talented third year music producers working at Vermilion Records have done an outstanding job producing and recording the music,” Dr Kelman said.
“The rest of the student team at Vermilion have worked hard behind the scenes mentoring the artists, and developing high quality promotional assets such as photography, videography, graphic design, social media marketing, and magazines.”
The launch is on from 11am-2pm in Chauvel Place (11am - 2pm). Copies of the record will be available for purchase with artists doing signings and guest DJ spots.
QUT creative arts students have had the chance to work alongside some of the best-known faces on Australian stage and TV by participating in rehearsals for the new production from acclaimed theatre company Dead Puppet Society.
QUT has welcomed Federal Government funding of $4.7 million to launch the Employing Queensland: Innovative Pathways to Teaching (EQuIPT) program which aims to strategically address critical teaching shortages in regional, rural, and remote Queensland schools.
