What is a Commonwealth supported place?
A CSP is a place at a university or higher education provider where the government pays part of your fees. This subsidy is not a loan, and you don’t have to pay it back. The remaining portion is called the ‘student contribution amount’, which you need to pay, either through a HECS-HELP loan or your own means. The fee will vary depending on the course you decide to study.
Postgraduate subsidised courses
We know that cost is a major factor in your decision to study, that’s why QUT offers a range of postgraduate subsidised degrees where you can pay up to 80 per cent less on your fees to earn your qualification.
Whether you want to advance your skill set in IT or further your career in teaching, there may be a subsidised postgraduate course to satisfy your ambitions.

Who is eligible for a CSP?
CSPs are available for some of our postgraduate courses. The number of places and applicable courses vary each year.
Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for a CSP, you must satisfy one of these residency requirements:
- You are an Australian citizen and will undertake at least one unit of study in Australia that contributes to your course of study.
- You are a New Zealand citizen, living in Australia for the teaching period, unless your course requires you to live elsewhere.
- You are a holder of an Australian permanent visa (including humanitarian visa holders), and living in Australia for the teaching period, unless your course requires you to live elsewhere.
How do I apply for a CSP?
Complete your CSP and HECS-HELP loan application form provided by QUT by the census date.
You will be automatically considered if the course you apply for has CSPs available. Upon receiving an offer to study at QUT, follow the instructions to accept your offer. QUT communications will highlight if the place you have been offered is a CSP or not.
