QUT student Jordan Bartley has had a dream result representing Australia in Men's Wheelchair Basketball. The Senior Men's team known as ‘The Rollers’ competed in the AOZ (Asia Oceanic Zone) Qualification tournament in Thailand last month winning gold and securing a spot for the World Championships in Dubai later this year.
The Bachelor of Information Technology student and member of the Elite Athlete Program was on debut for the Australian Rollers. The team had a successful tournament playing against Malaysia, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and winning a thrilling final against Iran 50-56 to secure the gold medal. A 4.0 classified player, Bartley had an outstanding tournament on debut with 32 points and 18 assists.
Bartley said that this trip was extremely rewarding to not only to compete against the best international teams in our zone, but also learn from some of the experienced senior players in the squad both on and off the court.
‘I was extremely excited to make my debut for the Australian Rollers at the 2022 AOZ Qualification Tournament. We were able to take home the Gold Medal for the event, and most importantly qualify for the World Championships in Dubai later this year. We had to place in the top 5 to qualify for the World Champs, so doing so and coming home in first place was a dream result.’
The Australian Senior Men's team will compete in Dubai in November this year, for the IWBF (International Wheelchair Basketball Federation) World Championships.
QUT Sport will be launching a Para sport coaching scholarship in August, bringing together QUT PhD students specialising in skill acquisition run by supervisors from the school of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, sport specific coach mentoring and QUTeX courses.
