Mooting

Elevate your advocacy skills and kick-start your legal career with QUT’s world-class mooting program.

Mooting opportunities

Internal mooting competitions

Internal mooting competitions are run by the QUT Law Society. They represent the initial starting point for students who are interested in improving their oral advocacy skills.

First year law students may compete in the First Year Moot, whilst law students from any year of the degree may enter the Junior Moot if they have no previous mooting experience.

Further competitions run by the QUT Law Society include:

  • witness examination
  • criminal sentencing
  • negotiation
  • client interview.

External mooting competitions

Students who perform well in internal mooting competitions are encouraged to test their research and advocacy skills against some of the brightest young minds in Australia and internationally.

The QUT Law school provides students with the opportunity to represent the University in national and international level mooting competitions such as the Oxford Intellectual Property Law Moot (hosted in Oxford) and the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (hosted in Vienna).

High school mooting

The QUT High School Moot Competition is an exciting opportunity for year 11 and 12 students to engage with the law at a university level. Competitors are provided with a fictional client problem, and must prepare written and oral arguments to present in front of real world lawyers and judges. Involvement allows Queensland senior students access to the facilities of the QUT Law School, members of academic staff and legal practitioners who are keen to invest in the next generation of legal talent.

QUT Moot Club

Moot Club provides law students with regular opportunities to develop their mooting skills in a non-competitive environment and has become a cornerstone of studying law at QUT.
