This unit overviews the foundations of industrial biotechnology and explain how they are used for producing food, feed, biofuels, biochemicals, and pharmaceuticals. It covers the key concepts of biochemistry and microbiology that are fundamental to all aspects of industrial biotechnology, and introduces fundamentals of genetic engineering, metabolic engineering and synthetic biology and their applications for manufacturing bioproducts. Moreover, technical and non-technical aspects of commercialisation of bioproducts including research and development, intellectual property, quality management systems, regulations, ethics and safety will be discussed. This enables students to gain skills required for employment in a broader area of biomanufacturing sectors.","title-full":"ENN539 Foundations of Industrial Biotechnology","title-short":"Foundations of Industrial Biotechnology","url":{"current":"https://qutvirtual4.qut.edu.au/group/student/enrolment/units/unit?unitCode=ENN539&year=2025","prospective":"https://www.qut.edu.au/study/unit?unitCode=ENN539","timetable":"https://qutvirtual3.qut.edu.au/qvpublic/ttab_unit_search_p.process_teach_period_search?p_unit_cd=ENN539"},"year":2025,"years":[2025]}
