Using Australia’s response to the coronavirus pandemic as our primary case study, students will develop knowledge of the history of public health law and the entities tasked with making public health interventions (such as ordering a lockdown or introducing mandatory mask-wearing during a pandemic). The unit will then examine a number of ethical and legal issues associated with public health measures, including the inherent tension between executive power and individual rights and impacts on vulnerable communities (and the social determinants of health).
