The unit focuses on public health from sociological and anthropological perspectives, with a core emphasis on the ways in which social, cultural, political, and economic systems shape human health behaviours and outcomes. We examine the practical relevance of key social theories in relation to understanding complex phenomena, such as cultural safety, risk-taking behaviours, life-expectancies, and death. We examine links between ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, geography, and health. The fundamental message is that identifying and addressing social and cultural factors that shape people's experiences of health, illness and health systems is integral to reducing health inequalities, delivering appropriate services and ultimately improving population health outcomes.
