Award winning design graduate of the year
'QUT provided me with the theory, skills, and confidence to think more deeply about design. Through their extensive network of architecture and interior design professionals, I was encouraged to build valuable relationships and explore new opportunities. I was inspired by guest lectures, where notable industry leaders shared their expertise. Now, at COX Architecture, I am contributing to projects that positively transform the spaces we live in.'
Building connections
Our Blaklash Built Environment Scholarship aims to build greater representation of Indigenous perspectives in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and urban planning.
‘I want to take what it means to be Indigenous into a future career as an interior designer – hopefully, I can be a catalyst for other young Indigenous students interested in studying built environment.’
Industry-ready portfolios
'Every interior design project has some element of the 'real world', centred around real locations, real clients, and real partners. Research, site visits and conversations with real people all contribute to your understanding of how good design really happens, and how you can contribute to projects in the most effective ways. This degree also teaches crucial communication and teamwork skills that are incredibly sought after.'
Real-world workshops
'The highlight of my study experience has been the opportunity to freely explore and push the boundaries of design with the use of QUT's state-of-the-art design and fabrication workshop. I had the opportunity to use a laser-cutting machine to create a full 3D model of an iconic Brisbane building with only the floor plans as a guide. The diversity of projects that I have completed at QUT has left me with a portfolio of interesting work that has greatly strengthened my interviews with industry professionals.'
Industry connections
'QUT connected me with Populous through a paid internship. This enabled me to commence my undergraduate role as an intern and transition seamlessly into a full-time position with the company. Being connected with other emerging designers, and practicing architects and interior designers ensured the course was highly relevant to practice.'
Career development
'The very practical skills that I acquired from the design units enable me to bravely face design challenges and problems, not to mention all the devoted lecturers and tutors who helped me with my career development.'
On the job inspiration
'After graduating, I joined an amazing interior design team in Melbourne working on a luxury health and wellness hotel in Dubai. Even though this is my first role out of uni, I can communicate clearly and confidently with senior designers and project stakeholders. QUT provided me with the resilience and initiative to survive in the deep end of design and through new endeavours.'
Holistic design skills
'My favorite part of the course has been the capstone unit, a curriculum of three years of progressive learning. This unit has been instrumental in furnishing me with crucial design skills necessary for my journey as an interior designer. The dynamic studio environment fosters collaborative learning, which broadened my perspective and instilled in me a holistic and innovative approach to problem-solving.'
