Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film and Screen)

Storytelling for screen is no longer restricted to big-budget cinema releases and television series commissioned by major networks. The need for quality content across digital media delivery platforms such as subscription TV, mobile devices, internet, promotional campaigns and film festivals and events is leading to lucrative opportunities for multiskilled professionals to generate highly creative, captivating productions. With this Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film and Screen) degree you’ll have the opportunity to work across these many genres and formats, readying you for your film and screen future career. 

This course gives you a broad base of knowledge, skills and experiences to explore a wide range of career options within the film, television and digital media industries before specialising in an area of your choice.  You’ll have the opportunity to develop technical skills in directing, camera, editing and sound. To supplement the core skills you will learn on this course, you have the flexibility to customise your degree to fit your interests, with options to choose a second major, or a mix of other creative field majors, minors, and courses across multiple subjects.  

You will also learn new ideas to challenge your thinking and develop your skills and capabilities to be able to make a real impact through QUT You units which focus on real-world issues to ready you for a fast-changing 21st Century. 

Throughout this course, you will collaborate with other students on screen productions and be encouraged to develop ethical and respectful relationships that can assist you in professionalising your creative practice.  

Upon graduation of this course, you will have developed a broad base of skills and hands on production experience to position you as an industry ready graduate equipped for a professional career in the screen industries. 

Double degrees

Combine your Bachelor of Creative Arts (Film and Screen) degree with a second study area for greater career flexibility and opportunities in other industries. Consider a double degree with: 

• behavioural science (psychology): combine your passion for creativity with psychology for an innovative career as a creative counsellor or practitioner.
• business: develop skills to run your own freelance business or work in advertising or corporate sectors by combining your film and screen degree with a Bachelor of Business.
• law: use your skills for career options working as a director, scriptwriter or production manager, a media lawyer involved in copyright disputes, negotiation of licenses and talent agreements, or a filmmaker specialising in crime or legal content.

Careers and outcomes

Graduates work in the film and screen industries on film sets, for production companies or screen media outlets, and as freelance professionals. Career outcomes include cinematography, vision and sound editing, directing, script-writing, producing or production management. Those who specialise in producing may aspire to work in research, production management, script development and editing, or programming and scheduling for screen media outlets. There are many opportunities for graduates to start their own specialised business in the industry. 

Graduates have gone on to make films or programs that have won Oscars, Emmy, BAFTA, AACTA and IF awards. They have screened at prestigious festivals worldwide including Cannes, Tribeca, Berlinale, Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Heart of Gold Short Film Festival, Byron Bay Film Festival and Tropfest. 

Past QUT film and screen students have worked on television programs such as Burning Man, Doctor Strange, My Mistress, Hacksaw Ridge, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant as well as TV series Hoff the Record, Secrets and Lies, True Detective, Westworld, The Night Manager and Battlebots. Students have also worked on music videos include for Powderfinger, Silverchair, Washington, and many others. 

If teaching is your ambition, this course can be also followed with a graduate-entry teacher education Master of Teaching courses (check the entry requirements for specific teaching courses) which enables you to become a qualified teacher.
