World’s first artificial heart
QUT alumnus, Daniel Timms, nominated for 2023 Australian of the Year Awards, is the founder of BiVACOR and creator of a mechanical artificial heart that has the potential to alleviate the shortage of donor heart transplants to treat heart failure patients.
'QUT’s medical engineering degree is heavily based on mechanical engineering principles. The focus on integrating engineering principles with human physiology to design systems has direct ties to my current project.'
Engineers Australia award winner
‘It was an absolute honour to receive Engineers Australia’s QLD Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year award. I’m excited to utilise this achievement to put a spotlight on the incredible innovation and progress being made in the biomedical engineering field, and to continue to advocate for diversity and careers in STEM, especially in rural areas.’
Engineer medical solutions
‘During my studies, I have been interning with QUT's Biomechanics and Spine Research group which has been an exciting way to upskill in modelling techniques and understand the research that goes into engineering solutions for adolescents with spinal deformities and scoliosis. Every assessment piece, lab, and workshop in my engineering degree integrates real-world issues and scenarios seamlessly into the curriculum so we learn to become professional engineers.’
Bionic innovation
Medical engineering student Amelia Browne received a Highly Commended Innovation prize in the Students Bionic Innovation Challenge 2022. Amelia's team designed a wearable, cheap and lightweight bionic innovation that can sense what is touched and send a signal to the brain.
‘It was a unique experience that I can continue to build on, and possibly take into my honours year. I’m excited for this next year and competing again!’
Medical technology for remote communities
‘During my final year at QUT, I took part in a project to provide medical equipment to remote rural communities in Papua New Guinea. This experience was life-changing and put me on a career path working with remote and rural communities. I’ve recently led a pilot project in rural Tanzania managing the installation of oxygen facilities in 12 health clinics. Newborn babies are alive today because of those systems.’
Real-world learning
‘QUT provided real-world examples of medical devices, regulatory submissions, and international standards in our assessments and coursework from the get-go. Within my first week on the job, I was utilising this knowledge to develop a hazard analysis and design failure modes for an orthopaedic screw range.’

Explore this course
Medical engineers work with doctors and medical scientists to design, manufacture and maintain medical equipment to improve health care and medical services. The discipline applies engineering and scientific methods to find solutions to problems in medicine and the life sciences.
Medical engineering integrates engineering principles with human physiology to design, manufacture, install, monitor and maintain medical and surgical equipment. Medical engineers are responsible for the safe and effective operation of equipment such as monitoring, diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment ranging from CT scanners to kidney dialysis machines.
Explore your options
Your engineering degree features common units in the first year that combine broad foundation principles with a wide range of major choices, giving you flexibility and options before you choose your career specialisation.
Work Integrated Learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum and it is a core component for all engineering students. WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies.
You are required to complete 60 days (equivalent to 450 hours) of approved work experience in the engineering environment as part of your work integrated learning.
Careers and outcomes
Medical engineers design, manufacture and maintain medical equipment that empowers doctors and medical scientists to improve health outcomes and save lives.
As a medical engineer, you may design innovative medical devices such as artificial limbs and bionic implants, or develop improved monitoring and diagnostic equipment that will help diagnose illnesses faster.
Professional recognition
All graduates are eligible for an Engineers Australia (EA) membership. EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world.
