Sammie's first-year experience
'The reason for choosing my particular course is plain and simple—I absolutely love maths! My degree is full of practical experiences. In my first year alone, I modelled COVID-19 cases and vaccination rates, wrote a proposal to the council about the logistics behind bungee jumping from the Story Bridge, and made an interactive app to support elderly users with online shopping. This is invaluable in preparing us for the workforce.'
Making sense of the nonsensical
'I chose QUT because they have mathematics as a well-established bachelor, not just a major. The structure of the lectures and tutorials accommodates a wide variety of learning styles. The teaching staff were friendly and approachable, often with bountiful industry experience and infectious enthusiasm.'
International experience
'I love maths, it’s in every industry and people don’t realise how much you can do. I’ve travelled to Cambodia with Engineers Without Borders, staying in a rural community and sharing our knowledge about reusing plastic waste. It was great to see how my skills could fit within an engineering team.'
Get involved in research
'When I joined QUT, for the first time in my life, I was surrounded by hundreds of people who were as passionate about mathematics as I was, which was amazing. I loved QUT's quality of research and how easy it was to get involved. From my second year, I contributed to research using mathematics to intersect with biology and medicine to solve real-world problems.'
Push beyond your limits
'I chose to study a double degree in maths and IT because I had an interest in mathematics, and did small programming projects for fun in high school. Throughout my degree, I have been involved in in various IT and maths projects which built my confidence, serving as proof that I am capable of learning on the job and can deliver value to a community. I recommend QUT to others because there will always be something meaningful for you here, not just academically. It is a good place to find like-minded people and to push beyond your limits.'

Why choose this course?
This course provides high-quality learning for students who want to combine their studies in mathematics with considerable involvement in real-world applications and computational simulations. Computer simulation and visualisation techniques can be used in many research projects including bone fracture and wound healing, and modelling saltwater intrusion in coastal systems.
This major introduces you to a wide range of concepts in mathematical foundations, modelling and computational methods, and provides strong links between theory and application. You will investigate underlying mathematical theory to see how it can be applied to real-world scenarios from many fields of study including the physical and chemical sciences, biology, engineering and the social sciences. You will also develop computational solution and simulation methods to couple with modelling skills in order to investigate large-scale applied problems.
Explore this course
Mathematics is one of the oldest pure sciences and is the technical language of science, engineering and business. With qualifications in mathematics, employers recognise that you are equipped with the specialist analytical skills for today’s complex world.
QUT’s School of Mathematical Sciences is a leader in delivering world-class teaching and research outcomes, offering you advanced, relevant and modern courses designed for the real world, underpinned by our award-winning research.
Our undergraduate course combines underlying theory with modelling, computational skills and the latest computer technology to enable you to solve real-world problems and prepare you for your future career. Skill development in communication, problem solving, critical thinking and teamwork form an integral part of our courses.
Customise your degree
Foster your passion and shape your career through complementary study areas. As well as choosing a major area of study, your course includes a second study area, which can be either a second major or double minor.
A second major can complement your major area of study, giving you the opportunity to develop a significant depth of knowledge and skills in two discipline areas.
Mathematics Second Major
- Data Science provides the necessary skills to be a data scientist including statistical methods and data visualisation, computational tools and data management techniques for large datasets, and high-performance computing resources and techniques. This unique skill-set in statistics and computing will allow you to cope with sophisticated models applied to complex and/or large datasets.
Careers and outcomes
As a graduate of the Bachelor of Mathematics (Applied and Computational Mathematics) you will find employment opportunities across a wide range of areas, such as finance, investment, information technology, environmental management, health, marketing, logistics, defence, media, education and research. In addition to your knowledge and abilities in mathematics, you will also be highly valued for your analytical and problem-solving skills.
Professional recognition
On graduation you may be eligible for membership in the Australian Mathematical Society (AMS) and ANZIAM (Australia and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics), a division of AMS.
