Nursing for the real world
'QUT provides a practical approach to education and strong industry connections for health students, providing opportunities that give us real-world experience. I enjoyed all my clinical practice lab sessions, especially the simulation experience which involved collaboration, exchanging ideas and learning from peers from diverse backgrounds, preparing me for future work environments.'
Find your future in nursing
From the first day of your first year, you'll find a community committed to helping you succeed. You’ll be supported in your learning by nursing academics, with decades of experience, and practice your skills using the latest technology in modern facilities. You’ll fit in. Nursing students come from many different backgrounds, but they all share a passion for helping people. At QUT, you’ll find friends, mentors and a pathway to your future career.
A career helping people
‘During the COVID pandemic I saw the passion and dedication of healthcare workers. I wanted to be part of that. It’s never too late to study, to find that thing you’re passionate about. I graduated high school thinking I had to go to university as a new graduate, or miss my chance forever. But I’m here now—a mature age student, a single mother—halfway through a degree for my dream career.’
What’s it like studying nursing?
‘Nursing students have practical classes on campus in hospital simulation rooms. In my first practical class, our simulation room had four different clinical breaches that we had to discover.
QUT uses real hospital equipment. It’s exciting having a glimpse of my future career. I can practise techniques without worrying about messing up in front of patients, taking pressure off before going on placement.’
Patient and experienced teachers
'I chose to study nursing at QUT because nursing is very versatile and there are lots of options which makes it very flexible. Brisbane is a welcoming city for international students and QUT is internationally known for their nursing degree. The teachers are all very kind and patient, especially to international students like me. They're very understanding and enthusiastic about the what they're teaching and all have experience as a registered nurse before coming to teach.'
Develop your confidence
'Through clinical placements, simulations, and interactions with healthcare professionals, I gained invaluable experience that mirrors the complexities and demands of actual nursing practice. This approach ensured I was well-prepared to provide effective care and make informed decisions in real-world healthcare settings.'
Study your passion
'I was always interested in supporting others, especially those who are vulnerable. I chose QUT as it had a good reputation for its Bachelor of Nursing course. My favourite part of the course was learning about human body - anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology - and practising appropriate interaction with people as a professional healthcare provider.'
Becoming a well-trained and skilful nurse
I have always wanted to work as a healthcare professional and I have always loved biology, anatomy, and science. I chose to study the nursing program at QUT because it is an accredited program in all of Australia and has a reputation of producing well-trained and skilful nurses to the health industry. I particularly enjoy the practical parts of the course - I had on-campus practical learning units and off-campus clinical work experience units as part of my course.
Engage with health research
'Studying nursing aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive difference in the lives of others. QUT's commitment to advancing healthcare practices through research aligns with my desire to contribute to the development of effective and equitable healthcare solutions. Being part of a leading institution in nursing research will provide me with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge projects and stay at the forefront of the field.'
Learn from the best
'Being taught by highly-educated health professionals at QUT has been the most beneficial part of my learning. My tutors, lecturers and facilitators encouraged me throughout my training and helped me to implement the skills they taught. I have developed my practical skills and critical thinking. QUT has supported me to become a more confident future health professional.'
Combine your interests
'My studies have helped me understand that there are many areas of nursing that I can work in. Studying a double degree in nursing and psychology influenced my dream to become a mental health nurse because I was interested in learning about mental illness and I also wanted to know how to treat them.'
Prepare for a real-world career
'Participating in work integrated learning units, work experiences, and internships was incredibly valuable. Through these experiences, I honed crucial skills relevant to my field of study, built a strong professional network, and enhanced my resume significantly.'
