Tackling malnutrition in Timor-Leste
'Contributing to the development of my country, Timor-Leste, is the most important reason why I chose this area of study. Malnutrition is highly prevalent in my country and has been one of the factors that hinders the economic development and the productivity of the population in the country. Therefore, studying nutrition science will provide me knowledge and skills necessary to help tackle nutrition-related issues facing my country and contribute to a better and healthy life of its population.'
Deciding on a nutrition pathway?
‘QUT offers degrees in nutrition and dietetics and nutrition science. If you want to work as an accredited dietitian you would choose to study the nutrition and dietetics course. The nutrition science degree is more generalised and prepares you to work with communities. However the first two years of these degrees are the same so it’s possible to use the nutrition science course to upgrade to nutrition and dietetics. I chose to study nutrition and dietetics because it combines two things I love, food and science!’
Food for thought
Hear about the opportunities QUT students have to travel, learn about nutrition in other cultures, and share their knowledge with students in Vietnam.
Real opportunities
‘A real highlight for me was taking a minor in journalism. It allowed me to expand my horizons and learn about a totally different field. It also helped me secure an internship with the ABC’s national investigative reporting team. I also volunteered with the Australian Red Cross as a student nutritionist and am now pursuing a career in nutrition with the Red Cross based in New York.’
