Work with professional players
Third-year sport and exercise science student Natalie Honnery is completing a 12-month internship with QUT's Education partner, the Queensland Reds, focusing on performance analysis.
‘We learn about performance analysis at uni, but my internship with the Queensland Reds has taken it to a whole new level. There’s so much incredible software these days, but understanding the numbers is the most important part.
It’s so exciting to realise how impactful performance analysis is, it’s so central to a team and their success. I really love this work and I know it’s what I want to do after I finish my degree.’
Find your career in sport and exercise
'The experiences I've gained through QUT have helped prepare me for my career in the sport and exercise science industry. I've had amazing practical placement opportunities as well as teachers that have gone above and beyond to help develop my skills and knowledge. Following a placement I’ve been asked to stay on at Coorparoo AFL club to help develop both their men's and women's teams for the upcoming season.'
Achieve your dreams
'I love studying at QUT because it allows me to meet incredible people in incredible facilities. As part of my time with the Brisbane Roar, we’ve been allowed to go along to Suncorp and learn about all the processes that go behind each and every game. What I’ve enjoyed most about this experience would be the opportunity to put what I've learned over the years at QUT into a real world situation.'
Pursue your interests further
During my undergraduate sport and exercise science studies at QUT I developed a passion for exercise physiology. In particular, how to improve the performance and recovery of athletes. This inspired me to progress to a Master of Philosophy focused on the physiological responses and adaptations to exercise in extreme hot and humid environmental conditions. QUT has some of the leading experts in environmental physiology, neuromuscular fatigue, and sports science, as well as world-class laboratory spaces and equipment, so the choice to undertake my research here was easy.
Real-world application
A research team led by QUT's Dr Tony Shield has invented a portable device that can help detect the probability of hamstring injury among athletes. It has attracted attention from some of the world's biggest sporting teams including English Premier League sides and National Football League teams in the United States.

A rewarding and immersive course
'I have always been interested in sports, and this degree allows me to immerse myself in this area of expertise while having the opportunity to help others and share my knowledge to inspire those around me. My favourite parts of my study experience were the practical and hands-on learning opportunities. Work-integrated learning and practical assessments allowed me to gain invaluable experience in the sports field.'
