Responding to trauma
'Trauma-aware education is not a program or another piece of work for busy educators to manage. Rather it is a shift in thinking, believing, planning and acting so that the harm that trauma exerts on the functioning of children and young people is minimised or alleviated and engagement, learning and achievement, can happen.'

Renowned expert and national leader in trauma-aware education, Dr Judith Howard, will lead a passionate and informed teaching team to deliver the microcredential.
Explore this course
The microcredential is built around three themes, completed over a 13-week period, incorporating a series of online (pre-recorded) lectures, online activities, and weekly online tutorials.
The three themes to be covered are:
- Key understandings, research, and evidence explaining the impact that living with the outcomes of complex trauma can have on the development, functioning, and education experience of children and young people.
- The application of this evidence to inform learner support strategies and processes and education policy and practice.
- Examination of the challenges faced by certain groups of children and young people who are disproportionately at-risk of various types of trauma, and how a trauma-aware approach to education can respond to these challenges.
Tutorials for each module will run for two hours and will be delivered in the early evening (outside of regular school hours), allowing you to connect with your tutors and fellow students, to co-construct knowledge and share ideas, and to receive support for completion of assessment tasks. If you are unable to attend any of the tutorials, the main content of each will be recorded for you to access in your own time. However, group discussions will not be able to be recorded.
To pass the microcredential, you will be supported to complete four assessment tasks that will help you understand, critically reflect on, and apply the presented content to your own practice and the broader education context.

At the completion of this microcredential, you can put your learning and capabilities into practice in many ways, including:
