QUT Law Founders' Scholarship Recipients Connect with Legal Professionals
QUT Law Founder's Scholarship recipients had a special opportunity to engage with the judiciary and legal professionals during the annual Law Founders' Scholarship Fund breakfast.
This year, the event celebrated an important milestone by introducing its first-ever patron, QUT alumna The Honourable Chief Justice Helen Bowskill. Chief Justice Bowskill, who has long advocated for the scholarship, gave an inspiring speech about her unique journey into undergraduate studies and the legal field.
Her Honour concluded her speech by emphasising the importance of diversity and inclusivity within the legal profession. She highlighted that a more diverse and inclusive legal community improves representation and enriches the profession by bringing in a broader range of perspectives and experiences.
In her closing remarks, she encouraged students to always stay true to themselves, reminding them that authenticity and integrity are essential qualities in both their personal and professional lives.
Scholarship recipient Emily Thai, a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student, reflected on the event:
“Highlights of the law breakfast included seeing past recipients, hearing their stories, and knowing I'm not alone in my journey. I also enjoyed talking with people in the law profession, as it made my dream of entering the workforce in this area feel more realistic and achievable.”
Punitha Baliah, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student, also found the experience invaluable:
“One of the highlights of attending the Law Founders’ Scholarship breakfast was connecting with fellow recipients and members of the legal profession. Hearing their inspiring stories was incredibly motivating. It was truly encouraging to be surrounded by such accomplished individuals and to feel supported in my journey.”
Established in 2000, the fund has helped more than 110 students by providing financial assistance, one-on-one mentoring and networking support. Many of these students have gone on to have successful careers.
“Receiving the Law Founders’ Scholarship means studying without worrying about basic necessities like dinner or groceries. It means I don’t have to stress over small expenses like buying Panadol or having a coffee with a friend. Although I am still mindful of my spending, I can rely on the scholarship to support me,” Emily added.
